First Quilling Creations

So, I've had a bit of time now to get to grips with quilling and I'm quite proud of my makes so far.  I started with a simple butterfly.  Firstly, I made two coils the same size and pinched them to make petal shapes.  Then I repeated this but with two slightly smaller coils.  The last coil I made was slightly larger and of a different colour. I pinched this one into a long tear drop shape, to make the body.  Finally, I made the antennae but folding a strip of paper and coiling each end.

After completing this basic butterfly I got a bit ahead of myself and decided to do a much more complex butterfly made out of many small pieces built up to make each wing.  It took a while.  There was A LOT of trial and error, resulting in many coils being thrown or put aside for another project. I also didn't take into account how many strips of paper of the same size and colour I would need and unfortunately I ran out, which meant I had to change my full butterfly into a flying butterfly, where only one side can be seen.
But, with perseverance, I finally did it and here it is.

Although I enjoyed making these pieces I think, after the mammoth effort it took to make the last butterfly, I will be taking a little break from quilling.  On Thursday me and my partner will be leaving Saigon to begin our travels to Hanoi and then home.  I'm not sure quilling is the type of hobby one could keep up on the road, moving from hostel to hostel.  It helps to have a permanent place to lay your pieces out.  However, I promise as soon as I'm home I'll be giving other designs a go and hopefully branching off into quilled jewellery.  Again, watch this space.
